Ross’Rant
There’s been a lot of chatter on social media and beyond about the Sam Fender weekend, a lot of it utter garbage. This is a local lad made good, playing in front of his own people and filling a huge stadium three times over. So what if it turned into a bit of a Newcastle United love-fest?
So what if he plays on it a bit? Seeing Dan Burn on stage with the Carabao Cup, coming on to Local Hero and the Champions League theme, tens of thousands of people who would normally never wear a black and white strip all kitted out - what an occasion, what a spectacle and what a weekend for the city.
Around 150,000 people descended on Newcastle and had a good time, bringing millions of pounds into the economy. What’s not to like? Ask the local restaurants like Kafe Neon if they’re not happy. Ask the pubs and shops. Yes, prices for tickets and merchandise are a tad high for working class people and a musician who eschews his working class roots, but the boy has done good for himself, good for the region and anyone peddling any other narrative is just jealous.
